Cholesterol-Inducing Foods: What to Avoid

Full-fat dairy

Cook using part-skim cheese, such as swiss or mozzarella, instead of full-fat varieties. Get your daily dose of calcium by drinking skim (nonfat). Make sure you get low-fat or non-fat versions of yogurt. Instead of butter, use extra-virgin olive oil or avocado oil.


Red meat


Because of the high levels of saturated fats and cholesterol in these foods (Steak, beef roast, ribs, pork chops, and ground beef), it is not uncommon for them to be served as an entrée or as a side dish.


If you're going to eat animal protein, go for lower-fat options like baked skinless or lean ground poultry or 90 percent lean ground beef.


Processed meat


Because of its high salt level and lack of nutritional value, you should generally avoid processed meat. The fat from cattle or pork is often used to make bacon, sausage, and hot dogs.


If you have to consume processed meat, go for lean turkey, chicken sausage, or deli meat.


Fried foods


The oil used to deep fry dishes like French fries, fried chicken with skin, and other deep-fried items has a lot of saturated fat and cholesterol.


Baked chicken or turkey without the skin, baked potatoes, or baked fries with a bit of olive oil are healthier options than fried or steamed food. You may get a lower-fat "fried" flavor by utilizing an air fryer.


Baked goods and sweets


Butter and shortening are common ingredients in cookies, cakes, and doughnuts, which are rich in saturated fat and cholesterol.


In addition, they tend to be rich in sugar, which may contribute to high levels of triglycerides, an unhealthy blood fat that can be a risk factor for coronary heart disease.


Choose recipes that don't call for shortening or a lot of butter, and cook your sweets at home. You may also reduce the quantity of sugar in recipes by half or three quarters. Alternatively, you may use applesauce in place of eggs or butter while baking and serve it as a sweet treat.
