Vegetables Are Good For Us - But Which Are The Best?

We have all been listening to our mothers saying: eat your vegetables. Scientists also agree: we need to eat 5 portions of vegetables to stay healthy. They particularly recommend to buy vegetables that are fresh and avoid those that traveled across the world to get to our table. So, when browsing Singapore markets, what vegetables should you choose to stay healthy, prevent signs of aging, and keep trim and beautiful?

Every scientist has is or her own Top list. Our mothers also have their favorite vegetables. They all agree – organic vegetables are better than mass produced vegetables, and fresh vegetables are better than those that traveled thousands of miles to get to us. So, we agree that we should eat more vegetables, but which vegetables are the most important for our health and well-being?


1. Broccoli

Did you know that broccoli has been around for 2000 years? People used to eat it much before they learned how good it is for them. Broccoli is full of vitamin C, vitamin A (mostly as beta-carotene) and folic acid. Its richness in calcium, makes it important food for people who cannot digest milk. Besides keeping our bones and teeth strong, calcium is also believed to control the high blood pressure. Rich in fiber, broccoli is excellent for your stomach health, and it may even be able to prevent colon cancer. And don’t forget, buy vegetables that are fresh did not loose their best value.

2. Spinach
We all know that we have to eat our spinach if we want to have big muscles. But, it is also good for every other part of our body. It has it all: vitamin K, vitamin A, magnesium, folate, manganese, iron, calcium, vitamin C, vitamin B2, potassium, and vitamin B6, phosphorus, vitamin E, zinc, dietary fiber, and copper, to mention just the main ingredients. It prevents macular degeneration and keeps skin healthy. It is good for the cardiovascular
health and helps prevent heart disease. It even prevents memory loss in old age. Keep in mind that to buy vegetables that did not loose their nutritional potency, you need to buy vegetables that are fresh from the ground and preferably organic.

3. Brussels sprouts
If you do not like Brussels sprouts, you are not the only one. But, you might change your mind when you see how good they are for you. Brussels sprouts are full of vitamin A, folacin, potassium, calcium and fiber. They are also great source of protein, making them an excellent choice for vegetarians. The studies show that Brussels sprouts can lower the risk of heart attack , especially among women. The most important benefit of Brussels sprouts is their ability to help eliminate carcinogens, thus preventing several types of cancer.

4. Lima Beans
Lima beans are popular because they are delicious, and because they are rich in fiber and make you feel full for a long time, making them great for weight-watchers. But, they are much more than that. They are good source of vitamin B6, niacin, folate, amino acid, lysine, iron, potassium, and magnesium. It that is not enough for you, lima beans are superb source of cholesterol-lowering fiber, they are rich in protein, good for lowering cholesterol and they control blood sugar levels. So, when you are in the market to buy vegetables, put some lima beans to our basket.

5. Green peas
Besides being very good source of protein and fiber, green peas are rich in iron and vitamin C, making them your great immune-system booster. They contain lutein, which helps to reduce the risk of macular degeneration and cataracts in older people.

Convinced? To stay for ever of healthy body and mind, be for ever young, beautiful and thin, all you have to do is eat your veggies. Well, almost all. Don’t forget, when buying vegetables, only buy vegetables that are fresh, locally grown and free of pesticides. What is the use of eating all these vegetables if you are also loading yourself with damaging chemicals.
